Based on Woody Guthrie's song, "1913 Massacre," this film tells the story of the Christmas Eve tragedy when 73 persons, most of them children, were crushed to death on the staircase of the Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan. The victims had been attending a holiday party for the children of striking copper miners when someone yelled "Fire!" (there was none), causing panic and a rush to the narrow, steep staircase. Arlo Guthrie and many townspeople, including relatives of those killed in the tragedy, are interviewed in this one-hour documentary film. This event is sponsored by the Michigan Labor History Society and the Sunday night progressive cinema group. A pot-luck supper will start at 5 p.m. for those who wish to participate. The film screening at 6 p.m. will be followed by a reception at the Swords into Plowshares Gallery on the street level.
