Brunch & Talk with DAVID SHEEN @ MARYGROVE College A compelling inside view of how people of color — both Jews and non-Jews — are treated in Israel Free gated parking; free admission • Donations gratefully accepted from those who are able to help defray our costs Canadian-born independent journalist and filmmaker David Sheen is an Israeli resident, former reporter and editor at the Israeli daily Ha’aretz, and regular commentator on media such as Al Jazeera, BBC, Huffington Post and others. For over a decade, Sheen has produced written and video content on topics the mainstream media ignores. His presentation will describe Israeli racism and dehumanization toward people of color — African non-Jews, Ethiopian Jews, citizens of Israel, stateless Palestinians, and others — by top Israeli political and religious leaders, and the vigilante attacks they inspire. Sheen has written a report to the United Nations on Israeli racism, and currently is writing a book about African immigrants to Israel and the struggles they face. Sheen is extremely knowledgeable and this will certainly be an informative event you will not want to miss. OPTIONAL: bring a brunch dish to share. We will provide bagels & coffee for everyone (please RSVP so we have enough, but feel free to invite others and attend even if you have not RSVPed).

After 50 years of right-wing anti-government messaging and anti-government governing, it's no surprise that 75% of Americans today distrust government. Yet government is the tool we must use to build the kind of society we want. In this second "Make Government Work" Forum, we will learn from others who grew up Canada,England and other industrial democracies that are similar to ours economically, but worlds apart politically and social justice-wise. Panelists from Canada, England and other major industrial nations will talk about how their governments work and what their citizens think about government. Most U.S. citizens don't trust government, don't believe it will ever help people like them, fall back on individualistic solutions and don't get involved in politics. Location: Marygrove College, Madame Cadillac Building, 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit. Sponsored by: Southeast Michigan Jobs with Justice and UAW Region 1 Retirees Council.

Activist minister, Rev. Bill Wylie Kellerman, will speak on how and why faith must lead to work for human rights. How can social action be shared by faith? What does faith have to do with emergency managers, water shutoffs, gentrification and other issues that face Detroit? Sponsored by the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights and Marygrove Social Justice Program. Hope to have two responders from different faiths. $5 donation at the door.
