LaRue has been a regular volunteer at Pro Arts for over ten years. Since the organization moved to its current location in Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in 2010, LaRue has volunteered weekly on Friday afternoons; manning the front desk while also photographing special events in the gallery. During his time at Pro Arts, LaRue always has his camera on hand to capture moments in and around the gallery. Fridays offers a selection of these moments spanning anonymous activities in the Plaza to more intimate encounters with artwork, artists, staff and gallery visitors. About the Artist: Bill "Yama" LaRue was raised in Hawaii and has been a West Oakland resident for the past twenty-eight years. LaRue graduated from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu with a degree in psychology. Early in his photography career he worked as an assistant to Minor White. (Portraits of LaRue by White are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Portland Art Museum.) LaRue also photographed with Imogen Cunningham and Ruth Bernhard in the 1960s and 1970s. LaRue's black and white pictorial work includes photographing Lionel Wilson's mayoral campaign, as well as capturing the landscapes of Taos, New Mexico; Portland, Oregon; and the Bay Area. Over the past decade his digital color photography has spanned documentary snapshots of his community to surreal digital manipulations.
