‘Abilities in Motion’ to celebrate health and fitness for persons with disabilities
Features International Paralympian, David Wagner
The Connecting Communities Coalition, Portland’s only cross-disability group, will host its annual event, “Abilities in Motion,” from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, Tuesday, October 14, 2014, in the DoubleTree Hotel, Lloyd Center, 1000 NE Multnomah St., Portland, OR, 97232. The event is free, open to the public, and will include food and beverages.
“Abilities in Motion” will highlight the large number of health, recreational, and fitness activities easily available to persons with disabilities in Oregon.
The keynote address will be offered by David Wagner, internationally recognized paralympic wheelchair tennis player who is number one in quad singles and doubles in the world. David will share about his own untimely accident, which originally discouraged his lifelong goal to play tennis professionally until he discovered he could succeed competitively in tennis despite being in a wheelchair.
David, who is formerly from Hillsboro, has been in the top three in the world since 2002 and has competed in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London winning three gold medals, two silver and one Bronze. He is also a 14-time grand slam winner.
The event will include Portland Mayor Charlie Hales’ presentation of the city’s Making a Difference Awards to four outstanding organizations. It will also include videos about sporting, fitness and recreational events throughout Oregon. And, adaptive sporting equipment and information about events and programs will be available.
The annual event usually draws 500 people from the community. To reserve a place at the event, contact [email protected] or call at 503-261-1266, ext. 187. Information is also available on the website at http://www.thecccoalition.org.

6:30-8pm
Join Oregon Humanities for a happy hour conversation with historian Stephanie Coontz about government regulation of family life at 6:30 p.m. at the Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan St., Portland. (Doors open at 5:00 p.m.) A $10 donation is suggested for admission. Minors welcome when accompanied by an adult.
Stephanie Coontz teaches history and family studies at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and serves as director of research and public education at the Council on Contemporary Families.
