Workers World Forum Two Eyewitness Reports! Dinner will be served before the program. Program is free, donations accepted. Cuba. “The Debt is Unpayable” Cuba’s leadership in Latin American resistance and the struggle to free the Cuban 5 from imperialism’s prisons. Cheryl LaBash returned from the 9th Colloquium to free the Cuban 5 and against terrorism in Holguin, Cuba. This gathering brought solidarity activists from 51 countries together to build the worldwide movement to free the five, four of whom remain in U.S. prisons after 15 years. They only were monitoring anti-Cuba terrorist groups in Miami, yet were convicted of false charges of conspiracy to commit espionage and conspiracy to commit murder. Cheryl is one of five co-chairs for the National Network on Cuba and a contributing editor of Workers World newspaper. Honduras. The right wing stole the election. The Resistance continues! Martha Grevatt was part of the International Action Center’s team of human rights observers during the November 24 election in Honduras. The seven IAC delegates were there with around 170 solidarity activists from the US and Canada, who together had more electoral observers than the European Union and the Organization of American States. They personally saw irrefutable evidence that the ruling National Party—the right-wing party of the 2009 coup that overthrew elected President Manuel “Mel” Zelaya—stole the presidential election from LIBRE Party candidate Xiomara Castro de Zelaya. LIBRE Party emerged from the people’s heroic resistance since the coup. The delegation heard from different sectors of the resistance—indigenous and campesino activists, relatives of prisoners killed in a fire, victims of police attacks, the LGBT community, trade unionists, families of the disappeared and LIBRE activists who were denied the right to vote—all of whom are fighting in the streets to secure what they know they won at the polls. Martha is a Detroit autoworker and activist and frequent writer for Workers World. http://www.facebook.com/events/583728135053748/

Jerome Jerry Goldberg Topic: The Court Decision Denying the Barclays Swap Deal Contact: (313) 671-3715 URL: moratorium-mi.org E-mail: [email protected] Special Moratorium NOW! Coalition Meeting to Analyze the Recent Decision by Judge Rhodes Denying a Deal Costing Detroit Another $350 Million Come out to this special Monday night meeting of the Moratorium NOW! Coalition to evaluate and assess the significance of the victory over yet another disastrous financial deal that would have continued the economic crisis in Detroit even after the bankruptcy is over. Judge Steven Rhodes denied the scheme crafted by Kevyn Orr, Rick Snyder and their banker bosses to force the City of Detroit to accept additional credit on highly unfavorable terms. This is a victory for the workers, retirees and community residents who would have to pay even more of our income and casino tax revenue for the predatory actions of Wall Street. This meeting will feature Atty. Jerome Goldberg who successfully argued in federal court against the Barclays swap deal that would have provided at least $165 million to Bank of America Merrill Lynch and UBS for the disastrous 2005 and 2009 deals where $300 million has already been paid in interest. What does this decision mean and where do we go from here in the struggle to save pensions, healthcare, city assets, jobs and the right to vote? These are some of the questions that will be taken up on Monday at 7:00 p.m. See you there! http://www.facebook.com/events/554823017946866/

Coalition Meeting to Analyze the Recently Released Information on the EM's Plan for Restructuring Detroit Come out to this special Monday night meeting of the Moratorium NOW! Coalition to evaluate and assess the significance of the proposed plan of adjustment to restructure the City of Detroit after the bankruptcy is over. This follow up meeting will feature a discussion on developing a plan of action to demand that no cuts in pensions and healthcare take place and that there should be no destruction of city services and the selling of municipal assets like the Water Department and the Detroit Institute of Arts. What does this plan of adjustment from Kevyn Orr and Rick Snyder really mean for working people in Detroit and where do we go from here in the struggle to save pensions, healthcare, city assets, jobs and the right to vote? These are some of the questions that will be taken up on Monday at 7:00 p.m. See you there! http://www.facebook.com/events/554823017946866/

Facilitator: Thomas Michalak From the Paris Commune of 1871 to the Russian and Cuban revolutions and other struggles for national liberation, the propertied classes have always laid the charge of "terrorism" on the young fighters leading the struggle against exploitation and oppression. But it has been the terror of the capitalist rulers--whether through fascist tyranny or the use of their police forces and armies under bourgeois democracy--against which an outraged majority eventually rises. In this pamphlet, Russian Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky explains why the working class is the only social force capable of leading the toiling majority in overthrowing the capitalist exploiters and beginning the construction of a new society. Individual terrorism, whatever its intention, more and more relegates the makers of history to the role of spectators and opens the workers movement to provocation and victimization. Trotsky at the same time answers all those who slander the revolutionary working-class movement as "terrorists" and "adventurists". http://www.facebook.com/events/684466331605982/

For Immediate Release Media Advisory African American History Month (AAHM) 2014 Event: AAHM Forum, Sat., Feb. 15, 2014, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Topic: Nelson Mandela's Legacy and the Road to South African Freedom Speaker: Monica Moorehead, Managing Editor of Workers World Newspaper, NYC Commentator: Abayomi Azikiwe, Editor of the Pan-African News Wire, Detroit Location: 5920 Second Ave. at Antoinette, Near WSU Campus, Midtown Detroit Sponsor: Workers World Party Detroit Branch Contact: (313) 671-3715 URL: http://workersworlddetroit.org, http://panafricannews.blogspot.com E-mail: [email protected] African American History Month Forum on "Nelson Mandela's Legacy and the Road to South African Freedom"--Featuring Monica Moorehead and Abayomi Azikiwe Tata Madiba Nelson Rohlihahla Mandela (1918-2013) made his transition on December 5. His life was a testament to the struggle of the people of South Africa, the African continent as well as working and oppressed peoples throughout the world. Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) during the height of the liberation movements across the continent after the beginning of World War II. Mandela along with other leaders of the ANC and the SACP organized strikes, mass demonstrations and an armed campaign of resistance aimed at overthrowing the racist and exploitative system of apartheid. Between 1962 and 1990, Mandela and other leaders of the struggle spent years in maximum security prison. They were released only after a national and global solidarity movement arose calling for the end of apartheid and the liberation of the African majority in South Africa. The ANC took power in 1994 after the first democratic elections inside the country. This forum will feature Monica Moorehead, managing editor of Workers World newspaper based in New York City and Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of the Pan-African News Wire and contributing editor for Workers World from Detroit. Both speakers have traveled to South Africa to express their solidarity with the people for national liberation and economic justice. Come out to this African American History Month forum on Sat., Feb. 15 to learn more about the decades-long solidarity between African descendants in the United States and their brothers and sisters in South Africa. Both Moorehead and Azikiwe played a leading role in the Southern Africa solidarity struggle in the U.S. during the 1980s and 1990s. What is the true legacy of Nelson Mandela? Why has the corporate media attempted to usurp and distort his revolutionary legacy? This program will examine these questions and discuss the lessons of the South African liberation movement and their relevance to events today in Africa, the U.S. and indeed the world. A dinner of African American cuisine will be served. Donations will be accepted but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. http://www.facebook.com/events/811731678842051/
