War is violence in its most extreme forms. It is violence against humans, against animals and plant life, against the Earth and its bioregional ecosystems, against present and future communities that are thrust into the midst of war. This event is an anti-war rally. The purpose of this rally is to discourage and stop state-sanctioned violence of the most destructive kind. By nature then, this event is about non-violence and anti-violence. and therefore the organizers of this event do not in any way encourage or condone the use of violence against others at this event." Please share, everyone will be meeting in Pioneer Square to rally against the unjust war against Syria. Our Rally will be matched by other cities across the globe! Peace Love & Light Please feel free to offer any services you feel could be valuable to this event!

On Sunday, September 1, PCRI will host Portland Roots Festival at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. The festival will be PCRI’s first culturally specific food festival and will raise funds and awareness to promote healthy living through healthy food choices and activities through the rich and ancient sustainable food practices of the African people. Admission to the festival is free of charge and all ages are welcome. The festival will highlight the different yet similar avenues these ancient practices took through the celebration of food practices of African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro- Latin, and African Diaspora populations of Portland, Oregon. The celebration will feature food vendors, art, performances from Portland’s diverse African populations, and a talk by Growing Power's Will Allen. PCRI and its community partners will be present at the festival, sharing information and resources at festival booths. PCRI residents will also be at the festival, sharing their healthy food access journey. Residents engaged in this journey through multiple programs offered through PCRI in the past year: gardening, nutrition education, and Children’s Healthy Eating and Active Living Camp. Are you interested in participating or volunteering? Send an email to Nuhamin at [email protected] for more information, or download/view our volunteer information at http://www.pcrihome.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Volunteer-Packet.pdf.

AIDS Walk Portland, a 2.5 mile (almost 5k) annual walk brings together individuals, teams and volunteers with the goal of raising much-needed funds for HIV/AIDS services, public education and outreach to youth and adults most at risk for contracting HIV. AIDS Walk Portland showcases community spirit as people from all walks of life come together in the fight against AIDS. Participants enjoy breakfast, music, entertainment, the Kids’ Corner (arts and crafts, face painting, prizes and balloons), and inspirational presentations from community leaders. The focus of AIDS Walk is to increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education in order to remind the community that HIV has not gone away, infection rates in Oregon and SW Washington continue to rise and there are many things you can do.

Wipe that dopey grin off your face, Portlander! We're going to stroll through our beautiful, foot-friendly downtown finding piddly little things to complain about. At each site, we'll all briefly stand in a circle moping at it as hard as we can, then we'll call in a description of the problem to the city's official complaint line, then we'll comfort ourselves by passing around tiny slices of cake. Locations TBD. Let Michael know if you have nominations: [email protected]. This event is part of Walktober, the annual festival of foot fun by Oregon Walks. You can lead a Toberwalk, too: http://walktoberpdx.org/ http://www.facebook.com/events/616487531725330/

On November 22, help us restore the balance for Oregon's most vulnerable families. On the Day of Homelessness Awareness, people of faith from Portland and Multnomah County will gather at Pioneer Courthouse Square to show their support for restoring funding for emergency shelters. The weekend before the event, we will be inviting members of congregations to write letters to their local representatives urging them to restore funding for the Emergency Housing Account (EHA) and the State Homeless Assistance Program (SHAP). Our goal is that representatives from 100 congregations will bring 1,000 letters to the event. These letters will be blessed as part of the Convocation at the Square, and a delegation of religious leaders will then carry them to Salem and deliver them in person the same day. Schedule of Events: Friday, November 15 - Sunday, November 17 Viewing and discussion of A Time to Listen (20-minute congregationally-produced video on homelessness with a discussion guide) in congregations throughout Portland (download video and discussion guide at www.changehomelessness.com) Friday, November 22 7:00-7:30 AM Open house and breakfast hosted by Sisters of the Road Café. Breakfast to be prepared by Sisters staff and members of the homeless community 7:30-8:30 AM Walk from Sisters of the Road to Pioneer Courthouse Square. Proposed route passes along Burnside and under the Burnside Bridge. Key organizations to have doors open and offer brief tours along the route. 8:30-9:30 AM “Interfaith Convocation on Compassion and Justice” at Pioneer Courthouse Square. An interfaith gathering with music, reflections, and invocations from a variety of traditions, including a keynote speaker. Nonprofit agencies serving homeless populations are invited to table at the event. Contact us if you're interested in tabling at the Convocation. Click here to RSVP on Facebook. Governor Kitzhaber’s Department of State Lands (DSL) has a big decision to make on coal exports, and they have until April 30th to make it. Both the Governor and DSL need to hear from you loud and clear: Coal exports hurt Oregonians, and they have no place in our state! Please wear red to the action. We will gather in Pioneer Courthouse Square for the rally, then form an outline of the state with our bodies. We'll snap a powerful aerial photo to help our message spread even further. This is a family-friendly event, with sign making stations and play areas on site. Families are encouraged to bring a stroller and join the stroller brigade at the front of the rally! Testimony from children and youth will be prioritized at the People’s Hearing. For more info about family and youth participation contact Corinne Ball at [email protected] Coal exports threaten our communities, our local environment, and our climate. Join us this Saturday to make sure Governor Kitzhaber and DSL know that coal exports and Oregon don't mix. Thank you, Bonnie & the 350PDX team
